Posture in my Smooth Dance

This weekend I noticed after watching my videos from the UVU competition that my posture in Latin has improved, but my Smooth posture still needs work. I think that will help Kelani and I to do better at Nationals. Even in this photo, I could be more upright.

CDT

I went to see Contemporary Dance Theater in concert today. They had a great show. My favorite number was called "Under the Canoopy". It started off with a quote "who turns on the stars in the void of the night" and then a man and a woman proceeded to twist on the lights that were representing the stars. The concert made me want to for sure keep dance as a part of me for my entire life.

Valentine's Day Touching

In Dance 260, we got in a circle and had a massage train. It made me very conscious of my back. We rubbed, patted, massaged, swiped. I was behind Karina and Kelani was behind me. An embarrassing, yet fun activity. It made me remember how loosening up the muscles helps me keep good posture.

Posture all the time

I noticed that even when I watch movies I have had posture. We watched The Sound of Music last night and it was so bad because I was also on my phone the entire time. I need to not multitask technologies so much.

Hip action

So one thing I've noticed with dance is that is hard to get all the pieces to come together all the time. Since Kelani and I had our lesson with Kasha on Monday, we've been trying to apply what she taught us to our dances, especially Rumba and Cha Cha. Unfortunately, when I try to keep my thighs forward like she wanted, I find myself not getting the right hip action or energy levels. Makes it difficult.

I've been avoiding walking around with my phone out and playing Pokemon Go, which I typically do. Even when I do look at my phone, I try to keep my 2 points engaged. I noticed a difference today in Paso Doble with keeping my thighs forward and my hip flexors engaged.

"Keep the triangle pointing down!"

So yesterday I had a lesson on Cha Cha with Kasha, a professional that judged my last competition. It's a good thing I'm working on alignment because that was the thing she said I needed to work on the most. She said I pitch too far forward when I dance. She even made me wear this:
And told me that I always had to keep that triangle pointing down, no matter what I did. Then she told me to do that in day to day life as well. So I guess I'll be practicing that!

I'm resurrecting this blog for a class! In Dance 260 we have to look at categories from BEST (body, energy, space time) and evaluate them in our life. My prompt for this first week is:

"How is your alignment? How does it affect you specifically from day to day? Practice good, dynamic alignment and share how it is affecting you from day to day."

I know that posture is extremely important and it's really something that I have to work on hard. My coach always tells me to think of 2 points holding me up, one at my head and one at my lower back. I'lI be working on that through this week!
